Mosaic Waistcoats

Mosaic Waistcoats

These two waistcoats came about from a visit to Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice. I spent my whole time there marvelling in the mosaic floor and watching the craftsmen undertaking repairs. I went all round the basilica taking photographs of the detail.

On my return to my studio I decided to try to emulate the spirit and the look of the mosaics. Using marbled papers, I cut them into squares and, using a light box, I transferred the paper squares on to a backing paper and turned the result into a pair of waistcoats.

Mosaic Urn Waistcoat

I took many photos of the mosaic floor during a visit to the basilica of St Mark in Venice. I loved the centuries old designs all executed by hand. I investigated a variety of marbled papers and cut them individually to represent mosaics. This is my interpretation into a garment.

Mosaic Bird Waistcoat

This is a study following a visit to St Mark’s in Venice where I took many photographs of the floor. I wanted to emulate the mastery of the mosaic artist so cut each piece individually from a variety of marbled papers. This piece and the Urn took about three months to complete.
